Community Covenant
As with any healthy community, there are standards of living you should be aware of and be ready to put into practice. When living here, residents commit to more than a rent payment and receive in return,
more than room and board:
more than room and board:
- Behaviour Guidelines: Behaviour that upholds a Christian community, as outlined in community guidelines, is required.
- Sharing Common Space: As a way to care for the facility and those we live with, we share in the weekly tasks of cleaning and maintaining the common areas of the house. You will be expected to contribute one hour (actually only about 20-30 minutes) of labour per week in this endeavour.
- Meals: Residents are expected to participate in the preparation/clean-up of one evening meal per week that is served at 6:00 pm for all residents. (Each community member will be responsible for their preparing their own breakfast and lunch and cleaning up after themselves, unless otherwise planned by the community). The Coordinators will ensure that the groceries and household supplies are replenished.
- Participation: in weekly house meetings and group service projects or social events (as determined by the community) as outlined below:
This covenant asks you to agree to these five themes for community participation. The details of how you, or the community, choose to live these out may be developed once you settle in. What you/we do and how you/we do it may look different from person to person, or year to year.
Because I care about myself and the Emmaus Community, I agree:
Because I care about myself and the Emmaus Community, I agree:
- To Work Together with the community in order to achieve both my own goals as God’s child and the goals of the Emmaus community.
- To Be Safe, Emotionally and Physically - To take care of myself and my community’s physical and emotional safety. This includes respecting each other, avoiding destructive behavior, and observing the community guidelines.
- To Communicate - To give and receive honest feedback by listening to what others have to say to me and telling others what I am thinking and feeling too.
- To Grow - To seek to understand more about God. To step out of my comfort zone and take appropriate risks that I can learn from.
- To Support and fully engage in each area of community life:
- Academically: to create and maintain a supportive learning environment,
- Spiritually: weekly meeting times and through informal support,
- Healthy living: in my personal choices and in community,
- Service to those around us: collectively or individually as decided by the group,
- Fun: in my personal attitudes and in participating in social events as determined by the community.
